Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is a statistic that measures pitcher on performance based on factors only they can control. Per FanGraphs, “wOBA “Measure[s] a hitter’s overall offensive value, based on the relative values of each distinct offensive event.”FIP is based on outcomes that do not involve defense; strikeouts, walks, hit by pitches, and home runs allowed. FIP uses those statistics and approximates a pitcher’s ERA assuming average outcomes on balls in play.”
Past research has proven that pitchers don’t actually have much control over balls in play as defensive positioning, luck, and other factors completely independent of the pitcher allow batted balls to fall for hits. FIP then is a reliable measure to determine a pitcher’s true effectiveness.
To qualify, a player has to have pitched at least 1.0 innings per team game.
